Pergamum: ancient ruins in a beautiful natural setting.
Lipari, Stromboli and Etna: volcanic islands at the mercy of nature.
Pompeii: so long asleep under a blanket of ash this city offers valuable insights into its glorious past.
DIKILI
A small and peaceful part on the shores of the Aegean, Dikili has retained its picturesque charm. From here we head out to explore Pergamum, one of Turkey’s finest archaeological sites, not only because of the many and varied ruins but also for its splendid hilltop location. At one time a serious rival to Alexandria and Rome, Pergamum offers visitors the riches of its architecture in an intimate setting.
MYKONOS
“Queen of the Cyclades” with its white mills, labyrinth of whitewashed alleyways and quaint little port where boats bob lazily at the foot of the terraces, Mykonos never fails to inspire. One of the most romantic spots is the colourful “Little Venice” district where the houses are built right on the sea giving it a special ambiance. Allow yourself to be tempted by the numerous taverns which line its seafront opposite the old port.
CORINTH CANAL & ITEA
A grandiose impressive work of art linking the Ionian and Aegean Seas, the Corinth Canal is the fruit of a dream dating back to ancient times. The Emperor Nero had at one time envisaged its creation. From Itea we enter the immaculately preserved sacred site of the Delphi valley. Clinging to the precipitous slopes of the mountain, the white ruins of Apollo’s famous sanctuary rise up out of the pines, olive trees and cypresses. In total harmony with nature, it was a symbol of the unity of the Greek world in the 6th Century BC. The stadium and theatre offer a wonderful viewpoint across the Pleistos Valley.
LIPARI - STROMBOLI
Dominated by a fortified citadel, Lipari is capital of the seven volcanic Aeolian Islands. Lipari is deservedly famous for its natural and architectural beauty as it embraces some stunning panoramas, pumice stone quarries and a “Castello” built on the ruins of an ancient Greek acropolis. Not far from here we will be sailing round the forbidding yet impressive Stromboli, an active volcano which regularly erupts wreathing its summit in smoke.
NAPLES
Jewel of Italy’s Campania Region, Naples is home to some magnificent palaces, sumptuous Baroque churches and countless romantic squores. Classed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995, the old district’s rich artistic and cultural history is without equal. Nearby, the ruins of Pompeii provide a grandiose and moving vision of what was once a great city at the height of the Roman Empire. Having been asleep under a blanket of ash for so long, objects, houses and beautiful frescoes have been preserved almost intact. Pompeii offers a valuable insight into the past and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
