 |
Join the yacht-like Le Levant for a voyage to spellbinding ports of call on Black Sea cruise. Take in the antiquities and architecture of Nessebur, Bulgaria, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, and visit a private Bulgarian home. Your Black Sea cruise explores rich cultural traditions as Le Levant calls at ports in Romania and along the coast of Ukraine, featuring visits to a former secret Soviet submarine base in Sevastopol... the renowned Massandra Winery for a tasting... the Museum of Partisan Glory and the Potemkin Steps in Odessa... Livadia Palace in Yalta and much more!
NESSEBUR
A UNESCO World Heritage site, the “city of 40 Byzantine churches” is a small medieval town perched on a rocky peninsula jutting out into the Black Sea. A real little gem on the Bulgarian Coast, Nessebur will lead you through its serpentine streets to picturesque houses and small courtyards planted with fig trees.
CONSTANTA
Once a regular haunt of the Genoese and Byzantines, Constanta has become the biggest Romanian port on the Black Sea, a gateway to the south east of Europe. The old city is concentrated on a peninsula and is home to an imposing Orthodox cathedral and some magnificent ruins. Not far from here are pretty traditional villages nestled amongst the vineyards close to the Danube Delta. Just a few kilometres away you can explore the magnificently preserved ruins of the Histria site, an ancient Greek trading post.
ODESSA
Famous for its 192 Potemkin Steps, Odessa was immortalised by film maker Sergei Eisenstein in 1925. Founded in 1794 on the ruins of a Turkish fortress, Odessa is today a big commercial port which has retained the old-world charm of its neo-classical period. Its magnificent, world-renowned Opera and Ballet Theatre was built in the 19th Century by two Viennese architects and harmoniously blends Baroque and Renaissance styles. The historic centre and long tree-lined avenues bordered by pristine white buildings never fail to inspire.
SEVASTOPOL
Situated on the extreme south-western tip of Crimea, Sevastopol glories in a rich historic past where each period has left its mark. There are numerous sites and monuments built in honour of the heroism and bravery of those who defended the city during the Crimean War. You will also find some magnificent ruins of the Greek Chersonese city from the 5th century BC. Not far from Sevastopol is Balaklava, a pretty sheltered village in an azure blue cove, and the Ouspenski Byzantine Monastery embedded in the limestone rock and containing some marvellous icons.
YALTA
Nicknamed the Pearl of the Crimea, the mythical seaside resort of Yalta is encircled by mountains and has been the holiday resort of choice for Russian aristocrats for centuries. A mild climate, long promenades by the sea and 19th Century villas surrounded by palm trees have earned it the title “Russian Riviera”. It was here in the Livadia Palace where the famous 1945 Yalta agreements were signed. Other attractions include Pushkin’s house and the neo-Byzantine cathedral.
