Magical Black Sea Turkey, Bulgaria and Ukraine aboard Le Levant |
| 8 Days / 7 Nights•July 2 •Aug.20, 2012 |
 |
A magical cruise through the heart of the Black Sea. Discover ukraine’s famous
cities such as Odessa, Sebastopol and Yalta, all steeped in the country’s heroic
past and boasting a wealth of medieval architecture. Le Levant then takes you on
a magical journey up the Danube, which will forever be known as the “blue river”
since Johan Strauss dedicated the fnest waltz of all time to this mirror of Europe.
Today classifed as a uNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the Danube delta is a valued
nature site and some of its many tributaries allow you to get very close to the
extraordinary vegetation and varied wildlife. Truly this is a little corner of paradise
on earth!
NESSEBUR
A UNESCO World Heritage site, the “city of 40 Byzantine churches” is a small medieval town perched on a rocky peninsula jutting out into the Black Sea. A real little gem on the Bulgarian Coast, Nessebur will lead you through its serpentine streets to picturesque houses and small courtyards planted with fig trees.
ODESSA
Famous for its 192 Potemkin Steps, Odessa was immortalised by film maker Sergei Eisenstein in 1925. Founded in 1794 on the ruins of a Turkish fortress, Odessa is today a big commercial port which has retained the old-world charm of its neo-classical period. Its magnificent, world-renowned Opera and Ballet Theatre was built in the 19th Century by two Viennese architects and harmoniously blends Baroque and Renaissance styles. The historic centre and long tree-lined avenues bordered by pristine white buildings never fail to inspire.
SEVASTOPOL
Situated on the extreme south-western tip of Crimea, Sevastopol glories in a rich historic past where each period has left its mark. There are numerous sites and monuments built in honour of the heroism and bravery of those who defended the city during the Crimean War. You will also find some magnificent ruins of the Greek Chersonese city from the 5th century BC. Not far from Sevastopol is Balaklava, a pretty sheltered village in an azure blue cove, and the Ouspenski Byzantine Monastery embedded in the limestone rock and containing some marvellous icons.
YALTA
Nicknamed the Pearl of the Crimea, the mythical seaside resort of Yalta is encircled by mountains and has been the holiday resort of choice for Russian aristocrats for centuries. A mild climate, long promenades by the sea and 19th Century villas surrounded by palm trees have earned it the title “Russian Riviera”. It was here in the Livadia Palace where the famous 1945 Yalta agreements were signed. Other attractions include Pushkin’s house and the neo-Byzantine cathedral.
