Venice, Italy
Venice has been known as the "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Water", "City of Masks", "City of Bridges", "The Floating City", and "City of Canals". Luigi Barzini, writing in The New York Times, described it as "undoubtedly the most beautiful city built by man". Venice has also been described by the Times Online as being one of Europe's most romantic cities. The city stretches across 117 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic.
Split, Croatia
Split is one of the oldest cities in the area, and is traditionally considered just over 1,700 years old, while archaeological research relating to the ancient Greek colony of Aspálathos (6th century BC) establishes the city as being several hundred years older.
Kotor, Montenegro
Kotor is an ancient town in the middle of an enourmous bay which will take a long time to drive around. The old town is very pretty with its city walls, lots of churches and old buildings from Byzantine and other cultures, and a large number of places to eat and have coffee.
Dubrovnik, Croatia
Dubrovnik went down in history as one of the great sea republics under its former name of Ragusa. In its time, the city was Venice`s main rival. Take a walk through the old town and visit the fortress*, and you will get a clear impression of life in the Middle Ages. The former grandeur of long ago now makes for a bright and picturesque sight.
Mykonos, Greece
Mykonos is a Greek island and a top tourist destination, renowned for its cosmopolitan character which attracts large numbers of tourists.
Hydra, Greece
There is one main town on Hydra, known simply as "Hydra port". It consists of a crescent-shaped harbor, around which is centered a strand of restaurants, shops, markets, and galleries that cater to tourists and locals (Hydriots). Steep stone streets lead up and outwards from the harbor area.
The charm of Hydra town certainly lies in her rich history, beautiful port and waterfront unspoiled by motorized vehicles. The island offers a rugged charm and some spectacular scenes, and makes the perfect place for some self-exploration.
Piraeus (Athens)
Athens the capital and largest city of Greece, dominates the Attica periphery; as one of the world's oldest cities, its recorded history spans around 3,400 years. The heritage of the classical era is still evident in the city, represented by a number of ancient monuments and works of art, the most famous of all being the Parthenon. Athens is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Acropolis of Athens and the medieval Daphni Monastery.
